The Living River

We are blessed to live in Tenants Harbor, Maine, near the outlet to the St. George River in what we now call Maine. The St. George River is remarkably clean and relatively unspoiled. Unlike the larger river systems of the Kennebec to the west and the Penobscot to the east, the St. George River has not suffered the same level of dam building and industrial pollution.

The St. George River watershed is home to a number of thriving human communities from St. George and Cushing in the south to Searsmont and Liberty in the north, and has been home to Wabanaki people for thousands of years.

The watershed is also home to a wide variety of other than human beings, from the fish, mussels, turtles, and otters that swim in the river to the majestic pines and spruces that line the shores of the rivers and ponds. This series aims to explore some of the wondrous creatures that share the land with us and the complex interrelationships that tie us all into the ecological fabric of our home.
